Biography for Sue Hobson

Sue started sewing before she went to school coming from a family where embroidery, needlepoint and
tailoring flourished.  In 2003, to finish some curtains, she visited a quilt shop in Naples and on seeing the
display of quilts she was hooked! Quilting lessons began during several vacations in Florida and she
submitted her first quilt to a show in England.
She was accepted into the National Quilting Association Program for the Certification of Quilt Judges in
2008 and hopes to become fully certified in 2012.
Sue spends up to six months in Naples, Fl and the rest of her time in England where she lives in a small
village near Bath. In Bath she works as a docent in the Quilt Room of the American Museum in Britain
which is famous for its collection of American Quilts. In 2011 the museum celebrated its fiftieth
anniversary. As part of the year’s events the museum made a commemorative quilt to which Sue was
technical consultant. As well as helping the museum’s large number of visitors understand “quilting” and
American Decorative Arts she also gives lectures and talks about the museum’s quilt collection to quilt
guilds.
Since retiring early from her career as a Medical Biochemist she is able to spend more time quilting. For
part of this time she makes and sells children’s quilts to help raise funds for local hospitals. She also
enjoys travelling and can be relied upon to find a fabric store anywhere in the world!
